GMO Bill Dangerous
Haleakala Times – March 18, 2009
House Bill 1226, a GMO (genetically modified organism) Preemption Bill, if passed, would essentially eliminate our county and state’s rights to self-governance, or Home Rule. It would mean that only federal laws about genetic engineering would apply, and the state and county would be forced to depend entirely on the FDA’s questionable and dangerous safety protocols and regulations — all designed by the biotech industry itself. So far, by following existing federal guidelines, we have GMOs in Hawaii with no labeling, no informed consent, no safety protections for those who eat them, no legal protections for the environment that may be contaminated by them, and no scientific safety studies proving they are safe! By stripping the rights of our legislators, HB 1226 also strips citizens’ rights. Maui would not ever see their County Council pass a “No GMO Taro Bill,” as the Big Island has done. Our council members would be powerless, regardless of the GMO experiments the biotech companies chose to perform here.
