Biosafety leak feared at Kawanda research station

Biosafety leak feared at Kawanda research station
Daily Monitor – Kampala, Uganda – March 29, 2009

Uganda has violated an international environment convention that prohibits the leaking of confined live Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) into the environment, a Sunday Monitor investigation has uncovered. The leak of potentially hazardous bio-waste is being blamed on careless disposal practices by scientists at the National Agricultural Research Laboratory (NARL) in Kawanda, Wakiso District. The scientists disposed of parts of GMO banana bunches that were still under investigation into the open environment contrary to international regulations. Birds, cats, rats and other living organisms have been seen on the dumping site, feeding and exposed to the GMOs, whose risk level has still not yet been ascertained as per the requirement of the World Health Oragnisation (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture FAO) recommended Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety guidelines.

GMO regulations

GMO regulations
KBS Radio – March 29, 2009

French scientists who have been studying the effects of “Round up ” a chemical component used to keep weeds away from genetically modified foods, found that when the components were used in mixtures they became deadly. This is one of many reasons why The New Democrat’s are pressing the Harper Government to reassess regulations surrounding genetically modified foods says Local MP Alex Atamanenko. Atamanenko is against any increase in GMO crops, saying that there is no proven research stating that GMO’s are a healthy alternative adding that countries such as France and Hungry have banned GMO products that are still growing in Canada.

Naomi Wolf – The End of America

Naomi Wolf – The End of America Outlines Path From Freedom To Dictatorship – Compares George Bush To Adolf Hitler

Although many people compared President Bush and his policies with the actions of Adolph Hitler in Nazi Germany, few were able to itemize the process of converting a free society into a dictatorship like Naomi Wolf in her book and movie titled “The End of America”.

Naomi outlined what President Bush did in his two terms and illustrated the parallels to Germany, Italy and Russia during the 1930s, and Chile during the 1970s. She says there are ten steps to removing freedom from a society.

The great dictators learned from one another on how to close down a society. There were 10 steps taken. Naomi Wolf studied the Pinochet regime 1973. Over the past 8 years, Naomi says that a small group of people set out to undermine the U.S. constitution.

Germany would not have looked much different from the US today. Germany in 1931 had human rights and gay rights organizations. They were relatively free.

Heimat (Homeland) became a popular phrase in discourse within Germany during the 1930s. The Nazis used the historic term, first patriotically but later nationalistically. They employed Heimat to convince their citizens that anything foreign was bad. Soon after September 11th 2001, the government used the term in the newly created mega-agency called “Homeland Security”.

Is the FDA trying to take away your right to purchase herbs and supplements?

Is the FDA trying to take away your right to purchase herbs & supplements?
Examiner.com – March 22, 2009

Perhaps one of the greatest concerns of those who utilize herbs and supplements to support their overall health is that supplements will one day be regulated in a way that will limit access to these powerful tools. Since the US Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) was passed in 1994 which gave us the right to freely buy supplements, many have wondered if this would truly be the end of the battle. Part of the concern comes from the fact that other countries do not have the same rights to supplements as people living in the US. The Guidelines for Vitamin and Mineral Food Supplements, as developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex), has challenged other people’s rights to supplements throughout the world.

GMO Bill Dangerous

GMO Bill Dangerous
Haleakala Times – March 18, 2009

House Bill 1226, a GMO (genetically modified organism) Preemption Bill, if passed, would essentially eliminate our county and state’s rights to self-governance, or Home Rule. It would mean that only federal laws about genetic engineering would apply, and the state and county would be forced to depend entirely on the FDA’s questionable and dangerous safety protocols and regulations — all designed by the biotech industry itself. So far, by following existing federal guidelines, we have GMOs in Hawaii with no labeling, no informed consent, no safety protections for those who eat them, no legal protections for the environment that may be contaminated by them, and no scientific safety studies proving they are safe! By stripping the rights of our legislators, HB 1226 also strips citizens’ rights. Maui would not ever see their County Council pass a “No GMO Taro Bill,” as the Big Island has done. Our council members would be powerless, regardless of the GMO experiments the biotech companies chose to perform here.
